First off, thanks for visiting the Land Of Waterfalls website. We hope you enjoy using the site and that it proves useful to you. We have tried to make the website as intuitive as we can, but not everything is obvious and so we provide this help page.
We have tried to make the whole website work well on both desktop computers and handheld devices, so most pages have two formats, 'formatted' and 'freeform'. In formatted mode, the information is displayed in columns across the screen, while if freeform mode, the information is presented in a single column going down the screen. Pages displayed in overlays have no navigation menu, otherwise, formatted pages have the navigation menu in the left hand column and freeform pages have the menu at the bottom of the page.
The only 'cookies' that we store on your machine are those necessary to make the maps work - without them, no maps, and as one of the main purposes of the website is to show where waterfalls are on maps...
We do not use so-called 'tracking cookies'. We do not gather any information about you and send it back to our servers. Should you choose to use the 'track my location' feature on the trail pages, that information is processed entirely on your device - none of it gets sent back to us.
As has already been noted, the navigation menus are available either to the left of each page or at the foot of the page. On map pages, the navigation menu is found in the page's context menu. On desktops, right clicking on the page will display the navigation menu. On handheld devices, long-pressing the screen will do the same.
Excluding the mini-maps on feature pages, we display three kinds of map:
The home page map that displays all the features in the selected region. This is the only map on which you can click on features to perform a search for the features at a given location (wherever you click or tap).
Feature locator maps are available by clicking on a feature's location on its main page (not from a summary page displayed in an overlay). These maps center on and highlight the selected feature, making it easier to find. While the home page map is great for finding which features are in a given location, should you not know where the feature is located, you can search for it from the home page and, once found in the database, display its location on this map. To get directions to the location, the context menu for this map has an option to open the location in Google Maps.
Trail maps are listed in the 'Trails' section for waterfalls and parking facilities and show available (though not necessarily approved) routes to get to waterfalls. Please read our 'Terms of Use' page for more information.
Searches are all conducted from the home page and the website supports three kinds of search:
Location search is requested by clicking/tapping on (a) feature(s) on the map. If only one feature is at the location, it will be displayed on its summary page. If multiple features are returned the search results page will be displayed, listing the features at the location.
Name search is requested by typing a name or part of a name into the search field on the banner and either clicking on the search icon or hitting enter. Any matches will be listed in the search results page.
Region search lists all the waterfalls in the current region and is an option on the home page's context menu.
There a various other hints and tips available via the navigation menus. If all else fails, you can always email us at help@landofwaterfalls.ca and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
