Mineral Springs Falls

Description

Located on Sulphur Creek, Mineral Springs Falls is a 3m high, 2m wide complex classic cascade with year-round flow.

The story behind the waterfall that I received while talking to the owner, is that prior to its current condition, the creek actually ran underground at this point. The community of Mineral Springs was first settled in 1789 when Captain John Aikman built his home and a grist mill. In the late 19th Century, there was a desire to find oil in the area and a company set about drilling in search of it. They drilled down 200ft without finding any oil (because there was no oil to find) and decided to blast in the (vain) hope of striking rich. The plan was to lower explosives to the bottom of their pilot well and blow it up, however, as they were lowering the explosives down the well, they realized that they only had 100ft of fuse. Rather than wait until a longer fuse could be sourced, they decided to light it and run for cover. The blast was felt several miles away and fractured the bedrock, forcing the creek to the surface and forming Mineral Springs Falls.
